Hi, I'm Sydney Smith.

I am a multi-faceted Concept Artist, currently based in Kelowna, B.C.

I frequently find inspiration in wildlife and nature. I am equally as often inspired by stories and characters; both fiction and non-fiction, personal and popular, fairy tale foes and historical badasses. Due to this source of inspiration, these works are often bursting with semiotics and symbolisms.

When I'm not working on any of these personal or professional projects, you'll find me snowboarding or rock climbing, crafting jewelry, exercising my green thumb, or planning my next new adventure!

My Story

Refining my artistic skills since an age that predates kindergarten, I started my artist training by copying the artists surrounding me, ranging from hobbyist work left by my late grandfather to Neil Buchanan's Art Attack weekly TV Art ExtravaganzaAs my artwork and myself grew, I became more attracted not just to the bodies of work themselves, but the stories attached to them.

I became fascinated with the works and lives of Modigliani and Van Gogh in my early teens, learning to paint with emotional significance and for ones self. Nearing the end of high school I had discovered the works and stories of and associated to Gustav Klimt and Aubrey Beardsley. Possibly the biggest influence on my personal illustration style to date, this ultimately led to my personal obsession with the connection between visual and linguistic arts.

I began to make with meaning.

The decision to start formally learning techniques, histories, and skills related to the Fine Arts that would help me in visual story telling came not long after.

I began my creative study with some Creative Photography classes (Mohawk College) and later, a Photojournalism program (Loyalist College) .

Choosing to focus on classic art techniques, I attended the Visual and Creative Arts program at Sheridan College.

I have spent the recent years refining my classic and modern technical and creative skills; especially relating to visual story telling. This ultimately led to my enrolment in the VFS Animation Concept Art program, graduating from it in summer of 2020.
